Recently, I was "appointed" to be the Division Head of Plastic Surgery in Asian Hospital and Medical Center. I did not ask for the position since I know there are more senior colleagues to me that may be worthy of filling up the position. But with the encouragement of the newly elected Chairman of the Department of Surgery, I courageously accepted what was bestowed upon me. The quote "A great man doesn't seek to lead. He's called to it, and he answers" helped a bit in my decision. Transitioning into a new position can be both exciting and challenging. In this blog post, we will explore some helpful tips to ensure a smooth adjustment period.
Understanding the expectations and responsibilities
Adjusting to a new position requires a clear understanding of the expectations and responsibilities that come with it. Take the time to familiarize yourself with your new role and the tasks you will be responsible for. Review any relevant documentation or job descriptions to gain a comprehensive understanding of what is expected of you.
Additionally, it can be helpful to have open and honest conversations with your supervisor or manager to clarify any uncertainties. This will ensure that you are on the same page and can work towards meeting or exceeding the expectations set for your new position.
Building relationships with colleagues
Building positive relationships with your colleagues is essential for a successful transition. Take the initiative to introduce yourself to your new team members and colleagues. Engage in conversations and show genuine interest in getting to know them. This will help create a positive and supportive work environment.
Collaboration is key in any workplace, so make an effort to collaborate with your colleagues on projects or tasks. Offer your assistance when needed and be open to receiving help or guidance from others. Building strong relationships will not only make your transition smoother but also contribute to a more enjoyable work experience.
Adapting to the company culture
Every company has its own unique culture and way of doing things. Adapting to the company culture is important to fit in and thrive in your new position. Observe and learn from your colleagues' behavior and communication styles. Pay attention to the company's values, norms, and expectations.
By adapting to the company culture, you will be able to navigate the work environment more effectively and build stronger relationships with your team members. Embrace the company's values and incorporate them into your work to align yourself with the overall vision and goals of the organization.
Developing a new routine
Adjusting to a new position often requires developing a new routine. Take the time to establish a schedule that works best for you and allows you to effectively manage your tasks and responsibilities. Prioritize your work and create a plan to stay organized and focused.
Identify any new skills or knowledge that you need to acquire for your new position and allocate time for learning and development. By developing a new routine, you will be able to adapt more easily to the demands of your new role and ensure that you are able to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work.
Seeking support and feedback from my colleagues
Don't hesitate to seek support and feedback from your colleagues. They have valuable knowledge and experience that can help you in your new position. Reach out to them for guidance or advice whenever you encounter challenges or need clarification on certain tasks.
Additionally, actively seek feedback on your performance. Regularly check in with your supervisor or manager to discuss your progress and areas for improvement. This will not only help you grow professionally but also demonstrate your commitment to your new role and continuous improvement.
